Honor – The Lost Art

Yes you’re right, I am writing this column in reference to the recently self-confessed indiscretions of Rep. Anthony Weiner, the Democratic Congressman from New York.
However, perhaps to your surprise or dismay, I am not going to vilify the man for I understand that I too have made mistakes and would therefore be a hypocrite for doing so.

Instead I will prove how our society’s rejection of God is to blame for these all too frequent lurid affairs which are committed everyday by men on wall street and main street. (I want to make it clear I am not absolving Mr. Weiner of his personal responsibility in this matter.).

Solomon writes in Proverbs 18:12, “Before destruction the heart of a man is haughty, And before honor is humility.”

Very simply put when a society rejects their creator thus setting itself on the throne of morality what ensues is no morality at all. In fact, the Book the Judges in the Old Testament is famous for the saying “Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” This saying is so relevant to the current state of our morality here in the U.S. because we too have fallen into the trap of moral relativism which says, “What is true for you may or may not be true for another.”

This philosophy is so dangerous because it gives people like Rep. Weiner the ammunition to state, as he did, that he had not broken any constitutional laws or rules of Congress and will therefore not vacate his post in shame. And though he said he was sorry for his actions and took full responsibility for them, he didn’t back up his words with action.

It was clear, that Mr. Weiner saw his indiscretions as trivial personal flaws that can be worked out while everyone else just leaves him alone. Mr. Weiner did not develop this philosophy on his own but rather borrowed it from so many of our public leaders, past and present whether Democrat or Republican, whose dismal personal choices were in stark contrast to their public genius.

I agree that Mr. Weiner deserves respect of his privacy while he works through his personal demons but not on the tax payers dime. As a public official representing the American people Mr. Wiener and others must be held to a higher standard. As a nation, we must reinstate the expectation that our public leaders be men and women of integrity holding themselves up to the highest standards of morality and honor of whom we and our posterity can be proud.

We accomplish this by individually humbling ourselves before the Word of God seeking God’s righteousness which will result in a strong, healthy, thriving society. In other words, we must return to our roots as Americans which are found in the God of the Bible.

If we do not turn our hearts to the God of creation and soon, we will destroy our society from the inside out. Abraham Lincoln said, “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.”

Dear Lord, may You Arise in the hearts of this nation which once followed you that we may weep in repentance and once again follow your ways which are righteous and true forever, Amen!
